:: Who will you vote for?

Posted by Joelle on January 17, 2008

Observer Ethical AwardsYesterday the Observer newspaper launched it’s third annual Ethical Awards, and it is asking the public to vote for winners and make nominations for businesses and people both big and small, who are making a positive impact on environmental and social justice.

I’ve made my nominations. You can make yours now here.

My nominations:
::Best Local Retailer - Unpackaged - Packaging free organic wholefoods. A really simple good idea.
::Best Supermarket or Online Retailer Initiative - Marks and Spencer’s Plan A - It least seems to mean something ambitious - more than a bit of greenwash. I really wanted to nominate Wedge Card for their promotion of local shops, but they aren’t strictly a retailer.
::Campaigner of the Year - Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London - Some of his bold policies like congestion charging are making a real difference, and will help make London a world leader in sustainability.
::Politician of the Year - Caroline Lucas, Green Party - She did win last year, but we still need more politicians who don’t just talk green but have the balls to do it.
::Ethical Business of the Year Award - Howies - I just love the way that Howies approach what they do with so much thought and care, from the organic cotton and ethical production methods of their clothing, to the care they show for the nature and history of their corner of Wales, to the tap on the wall of their shop enabling thirsty customers to refill instead of buying bottled water.
::Fashion Product or Accessory of the Year - Eco Edition cardigan by Keep and Share - Promoting the concept of ’slow fashion’ with clothes made to last, rather than go out of fashion. Their lovely knitwear is handknitted in the UK, and the Eco Edition clothes are even more careful about sustainably sourced materials.

There’s also some bursary prizes this year for initiatives from kids projects to DIY, so if you or anyone you know has a big idea and needs some money, why not nominate them?
