Many tides ago (well, six months), before I moved to London and the heady world of publishing, I was doing a PhD on mermaids in medieval literature. I adore my new direction, but I occasionally miss my mermaids. This bag, freshly finished this afternoon, is my little piece of the sea, complete with three feisty mermaids!

The yarn I used is a beautiful Colinette Point 5 in the aptly named Salty Dog colourway. This yarn knits up gorgeously on 12mm needles; I used a simple garter stitch to emulate the waves of the sea. I lined it with some sandy-beige satin I had in my stash and popped on some plastic handles from Birmingham Rag Market.

I’m really pleased with the results, though I still have trouble attaching a fabric lining to a knitted bag - any tips?

That looks great! I have some handls just like that which I bought the other week to make a bag with - haven’t decided what the bag will be like yet though! :)
I do like the stich you used, you’re right, it does look like the sea! So pretty!

Thanks, Em. I do adore handles like this - so kitch and also very comfy to hold. I’d love to see what kind of bag you’re inspired to make with your handles.

That’s gorgeous! What a great idea using charms in a knitted thing.

That’s a lovely bag Kirsty. The rest of us phd folk still miss you, and the mermaids. Now I need to come up with a Victorian style handbag for mine - any suggestions?

Ooh, I like a challenge like that! A Victorian handbag… I’m thinking Importance of Being Earnest…

That yarn is gorgeous. I have a fairly substantial stash at the moment, but I never have the right yarn for whatever project I want to start.
Love the texture and colour of this one though!
Do you use online yarn stores, or prefer the touchy-feely joy you get in a proper shop? I’m open to new online shopping ideas :)

I’ve tried to buy yarn online, with mixed success. I once ordered a custom yarn from Hello Mango, which was divine and exactly what I was thinking of. Perhaps you could browse in your LYS and then see if you can find it cheaper online? I’m big on my LYS at the moment, though, and I want them to have all my yarn money!
