To the untrained eye, this might not look that impressive.

I’d be the first to admit this isn’t a lovely picture. But this is my first proper sewing project ever. If you’re like me, and you learn best by being shown, someone like my friend Melissa is indispensable. Today I had a sewing lesson (with cookies and wine on hand) at her house, and she had me make this cushion after only a few minutes. She also taught me a few cheats and was bemused by a few of my mistakes. We’re planning a fabric trip downtown soon! She also recommended Joann’s as a stop to pick up some basic equipment. Now I know I can make something, even if it’s just a square, I’m REALLY excited!

That’s great! I think it looks fab, and I’d be proud, too. What did you stuff it with, did you cover an existing cushion? How did you do the final edge?
Also, I think you should either post here or email me with the cheats if you are able to explain them by email, I would be interested to know – you’re so lucky to have someone close by to teach you! :)

Ha! You’ve been bit. I expect a series of increasingly elaborate housewares to follow…
PS: That’s much better than my first cushion – straight lines were a little beyond me at the time, so the seams look a bit like an optical illusion. Bravo!

Yay! It is so satisfying making an actual something that works. See, not that hard!

Emily – the final seam is just done really close to the edge. And I stuffed an old cushion in there – it’s Melissa’s cushion which she needed to recover.
