A few of my favourite things

So, I’m thinking a lot about gift packaging. Two reasons, really:
1) Somehow, it’s December already. Seriously.
2) I’m taking a fresh look at the packaging I use for my jewellery over at misskerryturner.com. Since I started running a business I’ve been through a number of changes of image, but I think I’ve finally found one that I’m totally happy with. Call it serendipity or fate, but I happen to have run out of my old pink bracelet boxes at just the right time.
With that in mind, I’ve been hitting up Flickr for inspiration. I’m into quite traditional stuff at the moment (brown paper, ribbons, that sort of thing), so I started looking there. The image on the left is a great example of a modern take on this sort of traditional style – inexpensive and using recycled/recyclable materials, but so chic and stylish. I especially love the button centrepiece.
Of course, me being me, I quickly found myself getting into much fancier waters. If this is your sort of thing, I suggest you check out this group: Nice Package. Although there are a few spammy entries in the pool (shame on you, crappy internet sellers!), I’m honestly amazed at the time, care and ingenuity on display – I can only imagine how thoughtful the gifts inside must be…
Of course, I doubt I’ll get around to lovingly wrapping everyone’s gifts in quirky old sheet music, hand-tying each with vintage satin ribbon and finishing them off with a personalised bauble, but I’ve certainly got some good ideas, both for myself and my business… Anyone else feeling inspired this year?

I always tear out pretty pages from magazines I’m finished with, then use these to wrap presents. It always looks really great and makes me feel green and goodly, and less guilty about buying Vogue.
At work we’re busy designing new tissue paper, ribbon, bags and all that jazz. I love love love thinking about packaging. There are some really good companies making recycled and recyclable packaging now that looks just as fabulous as anything else. Someone should invent a shredder that turns your bank statements into pretty confetti….

Ooh, nice idea. I’m looking into making gift bows out of old wrapping paper/newspaper – I’ve found a couple of tutorials and I think I’ll road test them some time this week. If they turn out anything like the pictures, I’ll post the results. Heck, even if they don’t, I’ll post the results.
It must be lovely getting to think about that sort of thing in your day job! Of course, I do actually spend a fair bit of my working time thinking about stuff like that, but I’m not actually meant to be…

You’ve reminded me, now I’ve got this year’s Christmas cards done, I should really move on and think about the “theme” for my wrapping… I was thinking of using the Guardian’s wrapping papers this year, but realised I won’t be around all week to
nickbuy them…December 1st, 2008 at 8:33 pm
I was out of traditional wrapping paper t’other day so I used some really nice patterned fabric offcuts and a ribbon. It looked pretty!

Ooh, I love packaging and wrapping. Simon thinks that I’m crazy, but I have to have coordinating paper every Christmas. This year, I’ve gone black and silver with lots of pink, blue, and silver ribbon. Tres chic.
