Sunday Shopping Bliss

It’s Sunday, which means I should probably be sulking that I have to go to work tomorrow. Fortunately, I’m not at all gloomy because there’s plenty of fun shopping to do. It would be a great idea to start at Canter’s, which is a fantastic place to eat. Cornbeef hash and eggs? Delicious! I wonder if I can convince someone to go to brunch? And its conveniently located right by the Fairfax/Melrose market. This is probably not news to Angelenos, but having lived here for just over a year, I’m still in love with the shopping.
I love this antiques market especially, which is $3 in (plus bonus lollipop!) and has stalls selling all sorts – vintage clothes and jewellery, strange old furniture, popcorn… You could easily while away the whole morning rummaging through book stalls and trying on shoes to work out if they’re pretty and vintage or just terribly musty. I do occasionally let my enthusiasm get in the way and am currently schlepping to work in my Shoes Of Disastrous Slippiness, risking my neck and my dignity. I just can’t say no to a nice peep-toe.
Once I’ve got well into the rummaging, fighting-through-a-jumble-sale spirit, I can walk up to Jetrag which has a $1 free-for-all on Sundays. Piles of clothes are spread everywhere in their parking lot. Belts spill out of gigantic bins. Determined shoppers throw garments ruthlessly in the air as they hunt out a bargain. Last weekend I found a Liz Claiborne dress:
and a rather strange jacket (is it air hostess chic? Does it just make me look like an oversized school girl? Only time will tell). This Sunday, I’m on the lookout for a new belt. Or whatever. I mean, it’s a dollar.
If I’ve still got any fighting spirit in me after that I might go to ‘Out of the Closet’ at 6210 Sunset. By far my favourite thrift store, this particular Out of the Closet has really good kitchenware (check out these cute espresso cups), a great range of dresses and quirky menswear, and again, extremely cheap shoes. What’s with LA? Is it all the celebrities? Does everyone get bored of their shoes very easily?
Oh well. As long as they wind up at a thrift store, I think its great. Find your local Out of the Closet here.
