It’s no secret that I have a thing for bags. Making them, buying them, reluctantly parting with them when I realise that I have too many – yet again. I have a glorious plan for a luscious mermaid bag, using a beautiful teal Colinette point 5 and some mermaid charms, but for now I’ve practised my fledging crochet skills on Sherbert. I couldn’t stop marvelling at how simple it was – I didn’t even need to line it. Crochet rocks.
The pink and orange acrylic blends were from my stash.

That looks great! How did you do the handles?

I was surprised by how easy the handles were, Em. Basically, instead of hooking into the stitches on the row below, I chain stitched for the width that I wanted the handles, then joined bac kup with the previous row and carried on. Much easier than button holing in knitting.
I’m going to try and work on a series of beginner crochet tutorials, so that newbies like me can learn as I go!

How do you get the stictches back on the row above the handle? Just chain stitch the right number again?
It’s funny you posted this now, cos I was just wondering how to do button holes in crochet last night! :)

Fabulous! I’m finding that crochet is kind of intuitive – as long as you know the stitches, you can feel your way around.

How do you change wools in crochet – is it pretty much the same as with knitting?

Pretty much – just start crocheting with your new yarn and tie the ends together neatly. Having only one stitch on the needle makes everything so much easier…
