Sew it begins (sorry)!

Today I got a bag of scrap materials from Diamond Foam and Fabric on La Brea and Wilshire which was a bargainous $3.25, although some of the materials are a little thick. They also sell more useable bags of random cut-offs for $15 and bags of tiny scraps are free, if I understood correctly. So far I have made…fourgoodcorners-006.jpg That’s right – a terrible, inexplicable mess in pink, starry material that I have told myself is a lipstick holder. Actually, I’m still figuring out the machine – why would my stitches be way too loose on one side? Any ideas? It’s the underside. I accept that I’m not the fastest learner but Amy Karol’s ‘Bend-the-rules Sewing’ is helping, and I might actually be getting an in-person lesson soon – yay! Process update as actual projects begin to successfully shape up.

Materials are from Diamond Foam and Fabric.

I think it is something to do with the tension (though when mine was doing that it was because I had threaded it wrong), but I’m not 100% sure – I’m sure Kerry / Jo will have a better idea!

And I think the lipstick case is really cute! Maybe you could get some of those popper fasteners to fasten it?

You look to have some fun material in your bag, btw – I love the stripey one!

Yep, the tension is the culprit. Referring to my trusty manual tells me that if the underneath stitches are loose, turn the tension dial to a higher number. 4 is a good general number but it depends of the thickness of you fabric.

Credit due for sharing your very first project! When I started the first few experiments were not allowed to be seen by anyone!

I like the serendipitous matching of the fabric and book cover in the picture.

Me and my sewing machine are only grudging allies – it often tries to maim me and once pinged a rogue needle at my forehead. I really should use it more than I do, though.

Well, see, I aim to share all my disaster stories and then when I improve (crosses fingers) I can look back and see that I have made actual progress. I need to find a good sewing shop that sells fabric shears etc., too. Thanks for the advice on tension folks – I’ll dial it up to 6 and see what happens to my stitches!
