Reasons I’m not a professional baker #1

It’s my man’s birthday today and I spent all yesterday evening in the kitchen, slaving over… well, this. In my head, it was going to turn out better. Perfect, in fact, as things always do in my head. You see, there’s a reason I’m not a professional baker and the reason is, well, this. It’s wonky and a bit playschool, but I think it’s recognisable. Please tell me that you can tell that it’s supposed to be the Mysterious Cities of Gold (and please tell me that you remember that fabulous 80s cartoon). My husband loves this cartoon and we’re going to Peru in five weeks, so I thought that it was a very apt cake-make. I’ve spent all week sourcing yellow (tried for gold, but no luck) food colouring and thinking about the logisitics of stacking smaller and smaller squares of cake on top of each other. I’ve told everyone that I’m making the cake to end all cakes. I baked yesterday and deocrated today. I’ve done my best. If it ends up on cakewreck, I would be a little disgruntled. At least the sponge tastes amazing…
P.S. That is the Golden Condor in the corner…

I absolutely promise you that I’m laughing with, not at! Ten out of ten for effort, thoughtfulness and ambition – which are surely far more important qualities than being able to source gold food colouring, after all.
And I’m sure it tastes super.
PS: Cake Wrecks only feature professional cakes – if you’re not charging any money for this, I reckon you’re safe!

Thanks, Kerry!
It still boggles me that those wrecks are all professional! It would be mean to mock amateur cakes, of course, but I can’t see how those bakers got jobs. Well, I think her definition of ‘professional baker’ extends to Wal-Mart employees who, through luck or time served, made it to the inner reaches of their instore bakeries.

I have to admit, I don’t know what Mysterious Cities of Gold is. But I think the cake looks fabulous, and I would have been happy (if a little confused) if I’d received it! :)

Em – Mysterious Cities of Gold is an 80s cartoon that Simon loves (of course!) about some kids who sail to South America looking for Eladorado, a legendary lost Incan city made of gold. As we’re off to Peru in a move (eek!) to get a bit Incan ourselves, I thought that it would be a good cake-a to make-a :)
