Manly Scarf

In her Son of a Stitch n Bitch, Debbie Stoller makes the point that sometimes the man in your life might not like the particularly hand-crafted look of what you might like to make for them. Not that they don’t appreciate it, of course, but that that chunky garter stitch scarf might not quite accentuate the tailoring of their business suit as well as it does your boho corduroy jacket. It’s been a while (about eight years) since I made my husband that chunky garter stitch scarf, which he stills wears happily every winter, so I decided that it was time for a new, grown-up scarf. I’ve still not graduated from designing scarves to something more complicated, but I thought that I’d share this pattern with you anyhow.

:: 4 skeins of Rowan Natural Silk Aran in Denim (470)
:: 4.5mm needles
:: yarn needle for weaving in ends

:: cast on 28 stitches
:: rows 1 & 3: (k4, p4)*, *repeat to end
:: rows 2 & 4: (p4, k4)*, *repeat to end
:: rows 5 & 7: (p4, k4)*, *repeat to end
:: rows 6 & 8: (k4, p4)*, *repeat to end
:: repeat these eight lines to desired length of scarf
:: bind off in pattern and weave in ends

After the first eight, you probably won’t need to refer to the pattern, it’s really easy to see which row comes next. Easy peasy!
