:: Here are a few (or one) or my favourite things…

Posted by Vanessa on February 12, 2008

img_0020-1.jpg Sometimes, of course, favourite things are very old. I don’t remember which Christmas I got this jewellery box for - perhaps my eighth- but I do remember the front of it used to have a small brass plate that said ‘Vanessa’ on it, which has since dropped off.

I could probably use another jewellery box - this one is getting rather full, and it’s suffers from ‘lumpy tangled necklaces syndrome’ but I just can’t seem to find another one that appeals. Does anyone have any ideas? I want it to look vintage, but be totally functional as well. I’ve been sat here looking through ebay, and etsy, but I’m uninspired. And I’m worried that if I make a jewellery box, it’ll look, well, like a box with some paint on it (perhaps I’m doubting myself a bit much there, but I don’t know; I’m the kind of person who can’t pritt stick a picture flat without covering herself in glue). Anyway, I’ll put any really gorgeous finds up on the blog for you all to see if you’ll give me some starters…

And by the by, the ballerina still turns…

I love that jewellery box! I will keep an eye out, and if I think of any ideas will let you know! :)

I had that exact jewellery box when I was little, but it didn’t have my name on it. I loved it so much, but it got blown up.

My poor necklaces are also suffer from tangled lumpiness, so I’d really love a jewellery box that lets them hang full length. Until then, I’ve taken a piece of cardboard, cuts some slits in it and separated my necklaces that way.

Does it play a tune? If so, what?

I had a similar one that played whatever that piece is called from Swan Lake that everyone just calls Swan Lake.

You’ve just got me thinking… You can pick up new versions of these for about a fiver on Amazon (usually Barbie or Disney branded), and I’m really tempted to pick one up and replace the dancer with a vintage one, trick out her area with some neat doll house accessories and totally pimp the exterior. Anyone fancy another challenge?

  5. Kirsty says:

Mine played the Swan Lake music!

Pimp my Jewellery Box sounds like a classy idea - I’m up for it.

I got a jewellery box which I thought let them hang full length, but it turns out that it is still too short, so they all pile together at the bottom of where they hang - they don’t get tangles as much, but they still do get tangled.

When I lived at home I made a necklace hanger with cardboard and paperclips… I could be a Blue Peter presenter yet!! :)

Ooh, I’m glad this generated so much interest! I love the idea of pimp my jewellery box… I couldn’t pimp the one I own, of course, but I’d love to pimp a new one.

  8. Kerry says:

Ooh, this is shaping up to be a good one. I’ll come up with a proper challenge proposal tonight.

  9. Kirsty says:

Emily - apply to be a Blue Peter presenter! (Does Blue Peter still exist?)

  10. Vanessa says:

Kerry - by the way it does still play a tune. I think it could be Swan Lake but I don’t know for sure. It would be great if I could make it play Moon River like my wind up Moon River music box I got for Christmas.

  11. Pimp my jewellery box | Charmed, I'm sure says:

[…] we’re cooking up over at Four Good Corners - full details will be posted soon, but check out this post for a sneak […]

Mo! I had the same box! And I thought I’d lost it, and saw one at a jumble sale and nearly cried. Then I found my old one back at home! It now has pride of place on my dressing table.
My ballerina has lost her skirt, though. Oops.
