In the middle of a raucous hen weekend in Newquay, we took some time off from drinking and wandered around the aquarium. I could spend all day in an aquarium - they’re so calming and I absolutely love the sharks and rays.

I spent about twenty minutes watching this guy - isn’t he amazing! If I wasn’t such a loser when it came to being scared of water, I might have been a marine biologist. I’m such a contradiction, with sharks being my favourite animal and then freaking out whenever I go in the sea. It’s not the sharks I’m scared of, of course, it’s sea monsters. Yep.

Other aquariums that I’ve been to have let me play with the rays, but this one had a strictly no touching policy, which is such a shame as rays are so affectionate and love to frolic! I know that oils in human skin can be harmful, but a bit of contact is okay.

And check out this dude!

lovely photos
I agree sea life centres are so calming, except when there’s hoards of school children on holiday

They are cute, aren’t they? There were some adorable seahorses, too, but I couldn’t get good photos of them with the lighting.

When I used to go to Flamborough on family holidays as a kid, we used to go looking for rock pools, and I got to hold a starfish that we found. It was great fun :)

Ohh, touching rays freaks me out! They have two faces! I don’t like them… love seahorses though.

Rays don’t have two faces! They just have their eyes on the top and their mouths on the bottom - like most things!
