Autumn!

Just like Kirsty, I’m getting excited about all things pumpkin (I may even be asking for her pie recipe shortly), but also all things cold and leafy. It’s time for knitting scarves in time for winter and crunching through big, red-and-gold, fictional quality leaves. Trouble is, at least in lots of Los Angeles – it’s not really cold, and it’s not really leafy. You can definitely find trees, and in a month or so, probably snow, if you’re able to drive into nearby mountains.
A walk through the nearby neighbourhoods might not require a big sweater right now (though actually today is fairly cold by SoCal standards), but you can scout out random bits of street art. This picture is from a bus stop near my house, and is far more satisfying to discover than the Banksy graffiti scrawled on shops in Melrose.
And it’s time to try and find some LA wool shops so I can knit in straight lines (I never really manage to purl properly) and make straight objects – any recommendations?

If you’re steering clear of purl, you could try Ysolda’s garter stitch mitts, though I’m sure you could learn to purl pretty easily (I actually find it easier to purl, because I’m a wonky lefty). Also, if you knit in the round, by the magic of knitting, one side come out purled.
I wish you were closer so that we could have a knitty day.

How do you knit on the round? I think maybe you posted on this before but I forgot…

There are two ways – circular needles and DPNs. Circular needles are easier, but your circle has to be the same size or bigger than your cable. DPNs are fiddly, but you can have a much smaller circle; socks are usually knit on DPNs. I used to be scared of DPNs, but now that I’ve given them a go, they’re not so bad.

If you only like knit stitch, I have a fantastic scarf pattern (I nearly typed recipe instead) I can send you. You have to do some additional wraps, and swap stitches from one needle to the other, but its still all in knit and once you get used to it is easy peasy (and looks ace).

The pattern Erica has offered does indeed look fantastic – she showed me the scarf she was working on. I would recommend it!
Also, hehe, Dan’s back is on your blog! He is nearly famous! ;)
