At the risk of sounding about five: today I participated in a Thanksgiving tradition I missed out on (not being an American child). I made a hand turkey.
This is not at all difficult and was strangely preoccupying – everyone in the office produced their own hand turkey and apparently did it in a distinct style, as a student then correctly connected each turkey to its artist. Here’s how:
- draw around your hand
- make your thumb a turkey head
- make the other fingers turkey plummage
- draw wings, beak, eyes and go crazy decorating and personalising the turkey.
We’ve now got a wall of turkeys in our office which the students are adding to. My favourites so far include ‘pilgrim and Indian turkey’ and ‘turkey with five turkey heads’.
What other hand animals/monsters can be made? A prize for the best one!

A piggie with nipples or a cow with an udder! Hold on, then they’d have no legs. Scratch that and replace with – any four-legged animal. Also, a deformed/injured spider, squid, or octopus. A sloth. A person climbing the stairs.

I want to see the person climbing the stairs.
